High-Level Technical Specification
Short Tip: A document specifying a high-level product requirement.
What is it?
It is a document that specifies a high-level product requirement. Unlike a detailed specification, this document aims to delimit the requirement’s scope in order to provide inputs for making the detailed schedule.
Why use it?
Although the detailing of requirements is carried out during the development cycles, the high-level specification allows an early estimate of work efforts, which is relevant in a product with predictive characteristics for costs and deadlines, among others.
How to use it?
The high-level technical specification varies according to the product’s characteristics. With software, for example, one of the techniques is to create use cases with the main sequence of events (‘happy path’ or ‘sunny day’).
Other areas have other types of specification documents.
