Strategic Goals
Short Tip: The organization’s main goals for the medium-long term.
What is it?
Strategic goals derive from the company’s future vision, i.e., what the company aspires to achieve. Problems, needs, ideas and products that are not aligned with the strategic goal should be discarded.
The methods to establish them may vary (e.g., OKR – Objective and Key Results, BSC – Balanced Score Card, etc.), however, they usually result in a list of goals and evaluation metrics.
Even though a company can adopt any method aligned with its culture and expertise, PIM-Go recommends the use of OKR, which is very simple and dynamic, in use in Google, LinkedIn and Spotify.
To make it easier, PIM-Go made available the OKR Canvas.
Why use it?
The definition of strategic objectives is essential to guide the organization’s actions and align the team’s efforts. It also promotes transparency and allows for constant inspection and adaptation, which is an advantage when dealing with challenging markets and change.
How to use it?
For OKR using the OKR Canvas, it is recommended the following actions:
- Define the scope of planning. It can be at the organization level, or lower, for example, for a specific department;
- Define an Objective and a target date. The Objective must be simple to understand and clearly indicate the direction the organization. Example: “To be the main reference in retail consulting”.
Repeat the process using a Canvas for each objective:
- Define the Key Results for each objective. The results must be numerical and possible to be measured. Example: “Being in the top 3 in 90% of Google searches for ‘retail consulting'” . Fill in for each result:
- The formula, which should be written in simple and clear language;
- The current value of the key result;
- The target for each checkpoint and its frequency.
- Finally, define the Candidate Initiatives that contribute to this result. They should be ordered by the group to allow the identification of those that contribute the most to the result. These initiatives will be those focused first by the participants.
